This Small Charity Week (22–29 June), Disability Huntingdonshire is proud to be part of a national celebration of the vital role small charities play in communities across the UK.
This year’s campaign, Small charities. Big impact., shines a light on the difference small charities make every day, supporting people, strengthening communities and creating change where it matters most.
In Cambridgeshire, small charities like DISH play a crucial role in helping people living with a disability feel informed, supported and connected to their community. DISH provides practical, personalised support for people navigating welfare benefits and works alongside them to access other services and support that can make everyday life easier.
As part of Small Charity Week, DISH will share stories that highlight the real difference our local charity makes. This will include sharing The Difference DISH Makes, a film produced by Light and Star Media after DISH won a Small Charity Week competition in 2025. The film gives people the opportunity to hear directly from those whom DISH has supported and to understand the difference that personal, local support can make.
Small charities are where change really happens. They are rooted in their communities, responding quickly to local needs and providing support that fits real people and real places.
At a time when many communities are facing increasing pressure, their role has never been more important.
Tracy Hyland, Chief Executive at DISH, said:
“From the moment someone first contacts DISH, we want them to feel heard, understood and treated with respect. Many of the people who come to us are navigating difficult circumstances, and being listened to can be the first step towards feeling supported and less alone.
Our impact can be immediate once an award is granted. The relief people tell us they feel is an affirmation of why we do what we do. The support we offer is personal, respectful and caring, and the time our team takes with every client makes a real difference.
There has not been a week in the last seven years when I have not felt proud of what DISH achieves, and especially of our staff team. They make me proud every day.”
Gethyn Williams, Chair of Trustees at DISH, said:
“Small charities are often the organisations closest to people’s everyday lives. They understand local communities, build trusted relationships and can respond quickly when people’s circumstances change. Larger organisations and public services play a crucial role, but small charities like DISH provide the personal connection, local knowledge and flexibility that can make all the difference.”
Small Charity Week is a moment to recognise and support the work of small charities across the UK.
Because when small charities thrive, communities thrive. And when communities thrive, society is stronger.
